Kristel Fourie has worked as a researcher at the African Centre for Disaster Studies at the North-West University for the past 9 years. She has been involved with the ACDS in various capacities since 2008 whilst completing her Honors degree in Development Communication with the North-West University. In 2011 she completed her masters qualification in Development and Management with disaster risk management as her main contextual focus for her dissertation entitled: “Building a culture of safety: The nature of communication between the Maquassi Hills District Fire Services and its community.” Apart from lecturing modules in the masters and postgraduate programmes she is also one of the facilitators for the short courses in disaster management the ACDS offers. In 2016 and 2017 Kristel had also coordinated the Media component for the EAGER Project, producing various short films of the project sites. Kristel’s research interests include communication within the field of disaster risk management, disaster risk reduction and the use and implementation of the Incident Command System, use of Media in Disaster Risk Management Context.
